What Is A Downpipe, And How Does It Work?

A downpipe connects the turbocharger’s outlet to the catalytic converter. By improving its shape and flow rate, a downpipe reduces back-pressure, enabling your turbo to spool faster and extract more power, especially at high RPMs.

Aftermarket downpipes often feature a larger diameter and smoother bends than OEM parts, allowing for improved exhaust gas velocity. This translates into:

• Faster turbo spool
• 10–20 horsepower gains on average
• Smoother power delivery across the RPM range

Even though the horsepower gains are modest, the turbo responds quicker, making the improvement instantly noticeable.

Catted vs. Catless Downpipes

Catted Downpipes

• Retain catalytic converters for emissions compliance.
• Can increase horsepower, assuming they replace a stock downpipe and catalytic with an all in one unit, although the gain may not be as substantial as advertised, as modern catalytic converters aren't terribly restrictive.
• Best for drivers in areas with strict emissions regulations. If strict emissions laws exist in your state, this is the way to go to meet emissions requirements yet still achieve a significant flow

Catless Downpipes

• More affordable and widely available.
• Provide maximum exhaust flow and aggressive sound - considerably louder than stock, which is a positive or negative depending on your preference.
• May be illegal for street use - and if you add a catless pipe and remove the stock catalytic converter, you'll note a distinct gasoline odor emits from the exhaust.

Downpipe Styles

Different styles of downpipes yield different results. The greater the separation between the gas in the wastegate and the exhaust, the smoother the overall exhaust flow is, due to combustion.

How Much Do Downpipes Cost?

Pricing varies depending on brand, vehicle, and whether the downpipe pipe is catted or catless. Pricing considerations include:

• Pipe Diameter: 2.5″ is common for stock builds, while 3.0″–3.5″ downpipes support higher horsepower (300+ HP).
• Length: Most downpipes match OEM length; some extended options exist for performance applications.
• Flanges: Donut or flat flange options - compatibility depends on your vehicle’s hardware.

Can I Install A Downpipe Myself?

Yes, many downpipes are bolt-on and can be installed with hand tools. If you’re mechanically experienced, it can be a DIY project. You’ll need some basic tools and most installations are easier with a jack or car lift. 

Catless setups may trigger a check-engine light (CEL) and a performance tune may be required to unlock full gains and eliminate CEL codes. If you don’t have the required tools or experience, a professional installation is recommended.
