The fuel pump is located outside of the fuel tank on your Mercedes-Benz, underneath a protective plate. It is used not only to send fuel to the engine, while a sending unit sends a signal to the fuel gauge to let you know how much fuel remains in the tank.
The fuel pump will last quite a long time, but that does not mean that it is immune to failure. Just like any other electro-mechanical item on your car, the fuel pump will wear out over time.
